Fishing with Syl

We met a fellow in town when we first got here. He was selling fish, and we bought a large red snapper from him. Subsequently, we saw him again in town and started to talk. He said "If you want to go out fishing, let me know"  -- so a week later I called and set up a time to go with him.

Fishing with Syl was an interesting experience. He was born on the island, moved to Canada, - where he lived, had kids, etc.. then returned to Bequia in 1998. His island heritage goes way back to the Scottish who came to Bequia a LONG time ago. He is related to almost everyone on the island. "Oh, that guy is my cousin, brother in law, sister, etc". The family goes way back.

Other than having interesting conversations about evolution and creationism, local politics, thoughts on the big bang theory, and more -- we fished. Well mostly Syl fished and I watched. It wasn't like this was a guided fishing tour- it was fishing with Syl.

It was not exactly my kind of fishing. It was puttering around in a boat with couple of trawl lines out. We moved around in the water, but nothing was happening. In a couple of hours, Syl says "let's go to Plan B" and start to reel in...  BAM! he hooks up with a Skipjack Tuna.  Then the fishing stopped again.

He changed over to bottom fishing, but the drift was too strong to get two lines in the water from this small boat. So, Syl fished some more --- while he was lamenting "the fishing in not good today". He caught a red snapper and an "old wife",  then expressed that this wasn't going real well, -- so we headed back.

An "old wife"

I had a boat ride, Syl fished a little, we had some interesting conversations, and came back with 3 fish (which are now in the freezer)
