Western prairies are dominated by hay and cattle. The cattle are managed by a series of fences that keep them off the roads and in the right field.
There are many different styles of fences and they seem to range from simple and economic and elegant and costly. The main thing about fences is: Do you dig a hole that is very labor intensive since the soil if mostly a bunch of 2-3" dia glacial deposit stones, or, Do you not bother with a hole and build a fence that sits on the ground. It looks to me to be a choice between labor costs to dig holes and material costs to build what is basically a triangular or interlocking design.
So here are a few of the types of fences.
