Appalachian Trail

Harper's Ferry  is about half way on the Appalachian Trail ("AT")

We were at dinner on Saturday night (June 8th) and the people sitting next to us were an older man and a young guy about 25. Young guy had a headband, a beard and looked WAY healthy. It was obvious that he was doing the AT and having dinner with his dad.

I asked him if he was a Trailee (a word for people hiking the Appalachian Trail) ... YUP!  He was renewing his hike, as he stopped here last year... not enough time off to do the whole thing in one season. Dad was hiking with him the first few miles for that day.  We yakked a bunch about the trail, adventure and his job as a snowboard instructor at Steamboat.

Well we were out the next morning ... Sunday ... and met them on the bridge that crossed the Potomac - - they were on the way. The young guy was a solo and going ultralight.... no more that 30 lbs, and hiking in trail sandals.  He was planning to hike 20 miles/day. Good for him!
